These eggs are white and, at 1mm in length, quite small. As nymphs, bed bugs have no colour; once they feed for the first time, though, they have a purple or red appearance. Upon becoming adults, bed bugs have oval-shaped bodies that are flat, shiny and about 5 to 7mm in length. They have a distinctive odour and are reddish brown in colour.
Problems Associated with Bed Bugs
While you sleep, bed bugs feed on the exposed parts of your body. As a result, you’ll often find the telltale flat or raised bumps on areas like the hands, neck, face and arms. These bites aren’t painful, but they can cause irritation like redness, itching and swelling. Sometimes, allergic reactions also occur. It is important not to scratch bed bug bites too much, or they can become infected and the situation can become even worse.
In addition to having unpleasant physical effects, bed bugs can cause major problems for business owners. Hotels, motels and other establishments that are known to have bed bug problems often develop bad reputations. Many times, several rooms must be closed off in order to deal with the bed bug problem, which can cause a loss of income. The stigma that can go along with bed bugs can be very serious indeed.
